Rush Mixed Company!!! |
At many schools, the word "rush" conjures images of frat houses and Greek letters. Here at Yale, though, we do things a little bit differently. To us, "rush" means singing, bowling shirts, rush meals, impromptu concerts, tap punch, and singing desserts. Here at Yale, "rush" means a cappella. Every year, hundreds of talented freshmen flock to join the ranks of one of Yale's many a cappella groups in this crazy process which we lovingly call "rush."
It all starts at the Woolsey Hall Jam, where each group sings a few of its favorite songs so freshman can get an idea of each group's style and unique personality. About a week later, each group sings again at the Dwight Hall Sign-up Jam, immediately after which freshman have the opportunity to sign up to audition for as many of the groups as they wish. (Upperclassmen are most certainly invited to audition as well, but the majority of rushees tend to be freshmen.)
***For information about what an audition entails, or to listen to the clips of "Misty" posted online, click here.***
The next few weeks are full of rush events, all designed to help us get to know you better while at the same time giving you a better sense of what Mixed Company is all about. The events are all outlined in the rush rules, a set of guidelines which we all agree to follow in order to keep some semblance of order through this crazy process. Each group will host a full-length concert (called a Singing Dessert), and you'll have the chance to eat a few meals with members of the group (the first of which will be scheduled at auditions). By the end of rush, you should have a good sense of which group is right for you.
Your guides through this process are the rush managers, members of each group who will be available at all times to help you figure out what's going on, schedule you for meals, and answer questions for you. Don't hesitate to get in touch with them at any time--the reason they've picked this job is because they're excited to get to know all of the new freshmen!
After three weeks of getting to know all of the groups, decision time arrives. On Tap Night, all of the groups assemble at the High Street gate of Old Campus and from ten until midnight, sprint to the rooms of their desired taps, asking them to join. Who knows...maybe we'll arrive at your door, bearing a tap cup and a bowling shirt, and ask you...
...will you be the next member of Mixed Company?
